Opening Thoughts

Filed under: Uncategorized — Rick Dammers @ 2:25 am

This blog has a personal and a public purpose. For myself, I plan to use this as a way to process my readings in the music education research literature.  Hopefully, this blog will also spark discussion and help to connect research to practice in the classroom.  I welcome your thoughts and comments as this project moves forward.

  1. Hi, Rick! 🙂

I would welcome your comments and suggestions on a conversation I’m having with the Department of Education regarding its research funding policy, which appears to preclude any funding for research into arts education:

In brief, the Bush-era policy of the Department of Education’s Institute for Education Science constrains it to focus its research dollars solely on “reading, writing, mathematics, and science.”

The question is, will the Obama Administration continue this narrow focus, or expand the IES’ funding programs to include research into arts education?

With arts education poised to bear the brunt of impending school budget cuts around the country, research into increasing the efficiency of arts education could not be more timely.

I would welcome your thoughts & suggestions, and those of your readers, on this matter.

    Thanks! 🙂
